第一次世界大战前，十七岁的法国姑娘伊芙（露茜·格特里奇饰）迷恋上歌手阿兰（迈克斯韦尔·考尔菲尔德饰），跟随他跑到巴黎。后来她成为一个歌星，但男朋友却抛弃了她。战争爆发了，伊芙到前线演出，遇到外交官出身的军官保罗（迈克尔·约克饰）。保罗为参战，放弃了外交官的职务，引起丈人家的不满，导致妻子自杀。战争结束前一年，保罗在巴黎再次见到伊芙，二人相爱结婚。战后保罗重新成为外交官，长期在国外供职，他们有了两个可爱的女儿。小女儿弗蕾蒂从小就迷上了飞行，瞒着父亲跟着特技飞行员迈克（巴里·博斯特维克饰）学飞行。

十多年后，保罗携妻子和两个女儿回家乡休假，与分别近二十年的儿子布鲁诺（休·格兰特饰）相见，但布鲁诺对父亲很冷淡，对继母伊芙更是充满敌意。

大女儿德尔斐恩（米阿·萨拉饰）像当年的伊芙一样，在巴黎爱上了年轻的电影导演阿蒙德（查尔斯·肖内西饰），并在演艺界发展。二女儿弗蕾蒂（考特妮·考克斯饰）不顾父母的反对，坚持学习特技飞行，被赶出家门，与迈克同居。不料在一次特技飞行中，代弗蕾蒂驾机飞行的迈克失事身亡。

第二次世界大战爆发了，保罗再次从军，伊芙留在家中照顾葡萄园。二女儿弗蕾蒂也参加了英国皇家空军，与英国军官托尼（约翰·维克里饰）相爱并结婚。大女儿德尔斐恩在德军占领下的巴黎继续从事演艺事业。布鲁诺勾结德国占领军，出卖民族和家族利益，枪杀同胞，德尔斐恩不愿像他那样巴结德寇，布鲁诺气急败坏，竟将同父异母的妹妹强奸。伊芙为救成为战俘即将被运往集中营的女婿阿蒙德，参加游击队的伏击战而受伤……

战争结束了，保罗回到家乡，怒打布鲁诺，将其逐出家门。布鲁诺怀恨在心，背地里使手脚，使家族葡萄园的经营陷入困境，并夺得所有权，却被村民认出其是法奸而处死。

弗蕾蒂和丈夫托尼战后加入了战友琼克（美国人，布鲁斯·博克斯雷特纳饰）的航运公司来到美国，托尼拈花惹草，夫妻感情失和而离婚。弗蕾蒂在一次飞行事故中死里逃生，从此惧怕飞行。在战争期间一直就默默深爱着她的战友琼克的帮助下，弗蕾蒂终于重上蓝天……
