荧光指示剂等领域。
亮黄色粉末，溶于乙醇和
碱，微溶于
水；其钠盐为橙红色结晶，溶于水，呈黄色而有绿色荧光，不溶于
无水乙醇和
乙醚。熔点大于300℃。
荧光素溶于乙醇中加入
氢氧化钠、
亚氨基二乙酸、甲醛在一定温度等条件下反应合成，经水涤纯化而得。
