年轻的女孩Brett Eisenberg是一名兢兢业业的副编辑，抱着厚厚一叠书稿一边用铅笔涂涂改改一边穿梭于繁忙的街头，她有着一个美好的家庭，家人们都宠爱着她，这让她心思单纯却显得犹豫不定，她还有一个比她更不成熟的男友Jed，Jed抛下她一个人独自去了欧洲“寻找自我”。

一天Brett在参加一名作者的签名售书现场时结识了编辑界的奇迹——Archie Knox。Archie曾是Brett姑姑的男友，离了两次婚，曾有着成打的女朋友，作为一个父亲，他是失败的，但作为一个男人，他是成功且有魅力的。Archie看上了Brett的率真与惊人的记忆力，于是向Brett进行了追求，一面是Jed的不成熟，一面是Archie的权势与爱护，Brett最终成了Archie的女友，并与Archie同居。

在这期间，Brett换了上司，是个高傲的美女，她对Brett百般刁难，因为她也曾是Archie的女友；Archie与女友的关系愈来愈糟，他开始与Brett争吵并又开始酗酒；Brett得知她的父亲患了癌症，不久即将离开人世……一连串的打击使Brett不知该如何是好，她自暴自弃，却被上司赶去与一名著名作家签写合同，在事情快要变得一塌糊涂时，Archie匆匆赶来救援。

Archie与Brett重归于好，“好像回到了旧时”，Archie去见了Brett的父母，Brett的弟弟问她：“难道你找不到同龄人做伴么？”Brett无言以对。Archie离开不久后，便因急性胰腺炎进了医院，Brett匆匆赶去看望，随后她的父亲便去世了。

经历了这些以后，Brett从一名女孩成长为一名女人了。所以，面对Archie的求婚，她很平静地拒绝，很平静地离开。此后，她丢弃了使她犹豫不定的铅笔，水蓝色的钢笔果断地修改着一个个句子；她所编辑的小说，被摆在了书店橱窗最显眼的位置；她将长发盘起，穿起了那条很潮的裤子，自信满满地去参加鸡尾酒会。她成长了。

这是一部电影，关于一个女孩子的成长。

电影中的插曲都非常动听。前半部分，是轻松愉快的调调，充满着爱与信任，属于典型的美国风格；后半部分，则是忧伤但明亮的小曲，哀而不伤，让人看得到希望的曙光，如Speeding Cars、Cold Hearts等；而到了片尾曲，则有回到了开始的曼哈顿愉快的调子。电影的对白更是值得人慢慢品味，没有些文学知识的人大约是没办法体会那种幽默的，真是非常非常的遗憾，而那些关于成长，关于爱的对白，更是堪称经典。这部电影，不但关于爱情，更与亲情息息相关，的确，爱情不会是我们生命的全部，我们还有同样可贵的家人，我们还有自己。
