海岛科技开发公司的副总经理林剑虹，在纽约复旦校友会的一次聚会上，意外地遇见了十多年前为了去美国而弃他与孩子而走的前妻辛颖，而辛颖又恰恰是代表美国利曼公司负责与海岛公司进行合作谈判的代表负责人。

会晤

受利曼公司委派来到上海的辛颖，急于想见到自己的亲生儿子冬生，竟冒充林剑虹的表妹，来到了林剑虹的家，林剑虹的妻子梅宁热情地招待了这位从未听说过的美国表妹。然而没有不透风的墙，梅宁终于还是知道了这位漂亮而又有才华的“表妹”，就是林剑虹的前妻。

竞争

林剑虹因与海岛公司总经理邢昌智在经营管理中因想法不同而矛盾重重，终于愤然辞职。他和徐老、李华等几名科技人员自筹资金办起了太平洋科技开发有限公司。由于太平洋公司产品优势，日本的拉都公司与美国的利曼公司争相合作，一时间竞争硝烟四起。

林剑虹与辛颖工作朝夕相处，辛颖强烈的夺子愿望和对林剑虹旧情新爱，梅宁平静的家庭生活波澜起伏。林剑虹艰难地守护着他对梅宁爱的承诺。

就在太平洋公司勇敢地投入国际抗争的关键时刻，日本拉都公司唆使海岛公司起诉太平洋公司侵权，利曼公司闻讯撤消了合作意向，太平洋公司陷入摇摆。残酷的现实，使邢昌智终于认识到窝里斗的结果，他毅然撤销了起诉，林剑虹大为感动，对邢昌智也有了重新认识。

太平洋公司发展高科技产品势头让人振奋，而梅宁却时时感到她与林剑虹的感情危机重重，好强的她冷静地退出公司毅然决定走自己的路……
